Episode 6 - Ice Hell
71 year old offgridder Dan Mawhinney has decided after 41 years living far from society it’s time to sell his cabin. The only problem is, will his only potential buyer survive the 4 mile hike up a mountain to get there? Meanwhile, cash-strapped homesteaders, Jim and Nancy James have a crisis on their hands. The only source of heat for their cabin – their wood burning stove – has broken down. For a gun-toting recluse like Jim, selling his prized rifle to buy a new stove won’t be easy.
On the railroad, an arctic storm has pummelled the tracks up and down the line. Track worker Willie Washington and his team battle to clear dangerously over-hanging tree branches from falling on passing trains while Mike Hoadley and his track crew fight the clock to clear a broken down snow plough before an oncoming passenger train reaches them.
In Port Whittier, George, Wanda and Bill race to pull 10,000 tons of cargo off two barges before the tide turns. They then face a constant struggle to fix a broken air hose that's preventing the freight train from reaching Anchorage to deliver a huge supply of fresh food and fuel to the people of Alaska.
