Windfall Films announces success in BBC’s Horizon competitive pitch

20 June 2017

Windfall Films, part of Argonon Group, has announced it is to produce films for the BBC flagship science strand, Horizon, after a competitive pitch process open to all producers.

The company secured a bundle of films for Horizon, along with BBC Studios and Wingspan Productions.

David Dugan, CEO of Windfall Films, said: "We are delighted to have been selected to produce films for the Horizon strand. Windfall has a strong team of producers who are enthusiastic about bringing science to life - and we look forward to experimenting with new approaches.”

Windfall Films is one of the leaders in science and technology programmes in the UK and its reputation for innovative, specialist factual storytelling is internationally renowned. The multi-award winning company produced the hugely successful The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway for BBC Two; the critically-acclaimed Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb and Inside Einstein’s Mind (Best Physical Science, Jackson Hole Science Media Awards 2016) for the BBC; and Mutiny and the BAFTA-winning series Inside Nature's Giants.

Horizon will continue to deliver across the entire spectrum of science, offering films on subjects like engineering, technology, medicine, geology, physics, human biology, chemistry, the solar system, psychology and mental health. Horizon will feature a range of films from presenter-led authored films and access driven documentaries to innovative factual theatre pieces and hybrid factual dramas - bringing the very latest science stories to the audience from both the UK and around the world.

Tom McDonald, Head of Commissioning, Natural History and Specialist Factual says: "BBC Studios, Wingspan Productions and Windfall Films are three of the best Science suppliers currently operating in the UK. Their ideas are original, exciting and bold. We look forward to working with them and other suppliers over the next two years to build on Horizon's reputation for the cutting edge, and would like to thank all producers who submitted proposals into what has been an extremely competitive process."

Craig Hunter, Commissioning Editor, Science says: "Horizon is the place to deliver the best science journalism in the world and it's the place to experiment with a range of different story telling techniques and form. This is an exciting chapter in Horizon's story and I'm thrilled to be working with these suppliers to create a science strand of the most creative ideas, delivering scientific revelation and impact."

WINDFALL FILMS ANNOUNCES INSIDE CHERNOBYL’S MEGA TOMB FOR BBC FOUR

1 December 2016

Thursday 1st December, 2016Windfall Films, part of Argonon, has been commissioned to produce a 60-minute unique access special, Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb, for BBC Four.  The one-off documentary is commissioned by Diene Petterle at BBC Four and follows the construction of a 36,000 tonne steel structure to entomb the radioactive waste left behind by the 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster.

Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb films with the team of international engineers - close up - as they race against the clock to create the new structure before Chernobyl's original concrete sarcophagus – built to last just thirty years – collapses. Radiation levels make it impossible for workers to build the new shelter directly over the old reactor. So engineers are erecting the new steel megastructure – taller than the tower of Big Ben and three times heavier than the Eiffel Tower - to one side and will then face the challenge of having to slide the largest land-based object ever moved, into place over the old reactor.

Carlo Massarella, Creative Director and Executive Producer, Windfall Films, commented: Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb offers a unique insight into this trailblazing endeavour. Specialists from over 30 countries have joined forces to realise the $1.5 billion project that will protect European skies for the next 100 years. The 60-minute special explores both the human – and technical – challenges of building the mammoth structure on a radioactive worksite through the experiences of the core crew involved.”

Diene Petterle, BBC Commissioning Editor, Science added: “We’re thrilled to have such close access to this process and bring BBC Four viewers insight into this huge feat of engineering and the continuing impact of one of the most significant nuclear disasters of last century.”

Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb joins a captivating roster of programming from the BAFTA and Emmy award-winning Windfall Films. The programme is produced and directed by Martin Gorst. Executive Producer is Windfall Films’ Creative Director, Carlo Massarella.

Inside Chernobyl’s Mega Tomb will air on Wednesday 21st December, 9pm, on BBC Four.

A 60-minute version of the film, produced by Windfall Films (part of Argonon) for BBC Four in association with NOVA/WGBH, PBS Distribution, and France Television, NHK and N24 is set to air in Spring 2017 on PBS in the US.

WINDFALL FILMS EMBARK ON WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS LINER FOR CHANNEL 5

30 November 2016

Tuesday 29 November 2016: Windfall Films, part of Argonon, announce their new two-part series, Building The World’s Most Luxurious Cruise Ship, today. Ordered by Channel 5, this series follow engineers and designers racing to construct the Seven Seas Explorer - the world’s most luxurious ship.

Building The World’s Most Luxurious Cruise Ship films with a team of shipyard workers over 18 months as they battle to transform thousands of sheets of steel into a floating palace of luxury. The ship’s most expensive suite comes with a grand piano, a personal butler and its own spa, and costs £8,000 per night. Despite these prices, the maiden voyage is sold out long before the ship is complete. With the deadline looming, the engineers are striving to complete the £360 million super liner in time for the first cruise. Once guests are on board, will the Seven Seas Explorer live up to its promise and deliver the most luxurious experience on the ocean?

Shot across Europe and the US, Building The World’s Most Luxurious Cruise Ship follows the stories up-close, of those working hard to make this extraordinary build a success and see the dream ship sail.  Spectacular drone and time-lapse photography capture the vast scale of the operation. Live-action CGI animations explore the unique engineering challenges the team faces and help illustrate how a cruise ship works.

“This series reveals the complexity of this unique challenge, the enormity of the ship build and the lengths to which the team will go in order to deliver perfection.” says Windfall Films’ Creative Director, Carlo Massarella. “We are delighted, along with our co-production partners, to have produced a fascinating piece of television that gives audiences rare access to this process.”

The 2 x 60’ series is made by Windfall Films, part of Argonon. The executive producer is Carlo Massarella and the director is Martin Gorst. The Commissioning Editor for Channel 5 is Lucy Willis.

Building The World’s Most Luxurious Cruise Ship starts on Friday 2nd December, 9pm on Channel 5.

Foxes Live attracts same web traffic as Big Brother

2 May 2012

Channel 4’s new live interactive study of urban foxes in the UK attracted the equivalent web influx to the broadcaster’s website as a Big Brother eviction.

Foxes Live: Wild in the City, produced by Windfall Films, is investigating foxes over a four-part series to give viewers a better understanding of how the animals survive.

During the first live broadcast on Monday at 8pm, traffic to http://foxes.channel4.com/ peaked when presenter Anita Rani released a fox, Chico, back into Manchester and viewers were able to follow his progress.

Over 1,000 page views per second were recorded, the equivalent to a Big Brother eviction moment.

C4 is calling on the audience to help create a “census” of the number of foxes in the UK by asking them to report sightings. Since the broadcast, 4,500 sightings have been logged on the interactive map.

The producers are using CCTV cameras, GPS tags and “den cams” to track foxes at a time of year when vixens are giving birth and cubs are starting to venture outside their dens.

C4 multiplatform commissioning editor for factual, Kate Quilton, said: “We’re really encouraged by the level of viewer engagement which we expect to grow.

“We haven’t seen an interactive format perform so strongly at 8pm and are excited at the prospect of future interactive commissions in this slot.”

Alex and Bone Cancer Research

15 July 2011

Alex Lewis discovered he had bone cancer shortly before his 18th birthday after experiencing months of pain in his arm.
He played a lot of tennis and football, so perhaps not surprisingly, it was mistaken for muscular pain. When it was eventually diagnosed as osteosarcoma, it had already spread to his lungs. Treatment was several courses of chemotherapy, surgery to replace a large section of bone in his arm with a metal prothesis, and radiotherapy. One of the reasons Alex wanted to make the film was to encourage early diagnosis of the disease and to promote the work of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, who were very supportive of the Lewis family. Through public donations they fund research into bone cancer.
